A Conversation with “Stockton on My Mind” Star Michael Tubbs with Alamo On Demand

At age 26, on the same day Donald Trump was elected in 2016, Michael Tubbs became the first African American mayor of his beleaguered hometown of Stockton, California, as well as the youngest mayor of a major American city. Stockton on My Mind, from filmmaker Marc Levin follows Tubbs’ personal and political journey, exploring how growing up amid poverty and violence shaped his vision for innovative change. This film is directed by Marc Levin and written by James Lester and Marc Levin.

Mayor of Stockton, California

Tubbs has served as mayor of Stockton since 2016. He is the youngest mayor representing a city with a population of over 100,000 residents and has been recognized in POLITICO’s Top 50, Fortune’s 2018 Top "40 under 40," Forbes' 2018 list of the “30 Under 30” and awarded the John F. Kennedy New Frontier Award. Previously, Tubbs served as Stockton's District 6 city council member.

Smith is the CEO and co-founder of The Texas Tribune. Previously, he spent nearly 18 years at Texas Monthly, including eight years as editor and a year as president and editor-in-chief. Smith also hosts “Overheard with Evan Smith,” airing on PBS stations nationally.
