Clinton served as U.S. secretary of state from 2009 to 2013. Previously, she was elected to the U.S. Senate and became the first American first lady to win a public office seat. In 2016, she became the first woman to become the presidential nominee of a major political party. Clinton was also the first woman to win the popular vote in an American presidential election, which she lost to President Donald Trump.
