Young was appointed as a U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in 1977 under former President Jimmy Carter. Previously, he was a key strategist and negotiator during civil rights campaigns that led to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Young also served in the U.S. House from 1973 to 1977 and was the mayor of Atlanta for eight years.
