Thompson, D-Houston, has represented House District 141 since 1973 and is the longest-serving woman and African American in Texas history. She serves as chair of the Public Health Committee and is a member of the Licensing and Administrative Procedures and Redistricting committees. Thompson is a founding member of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and sits on the advisory board of the United Negro College Fund.
